PrepNow Tutor - Renee H.
A school counselor and admissions expert with a background in counseling, Renée holds a BA in elementary education from Calvin College and an MA in educational psychology from Western Michigan University. Renée’s admissions counseling journey began in 2011 when she attended the Harvard Institute for Highly Selective College Admissions. “That experience launched me into the world of college admissions and deepened my understanding of the complexities of the process,” Renée recalls. Over the following years, she worked at a college-prep high school where she served as a counselor and helped build a comprehensive college-planning program, expanding her expertise through national conferences, multi-state college tours, and collaboration with consultants in the field. “Much of my experience has also come from my personal commitment to providing students and families with a standout experience,” Renée says. “That has meant continually learning, visiting campuses, and staying current on the ever-changing admissions landscape so I can guide families with confidence and clarity.”
Renée was drawn to admissions consulting because of her passion for supporting students during such an important season of life. “I love helping teens explore their future, discover opportunities that fit who they are, and navigate the process with less stress and more confidence,” Renée says. Her favorite part about mentoring students through the college planning process is seeing their moments of discovery. She loves guiding students through the entire journey—from the early uncertainty and questions to the excitement and celebration that comes with deciding about what comes next. “By the end of the process, students often feel a real sense of accomplishment, growth, and anticipation for the future.” Above all, Renée ensures students and families do not have to navigate this journey alone. “Building trusting relationships, getting to know each student personally, and supporting them through both the stressful and exciting moments is what makes this work so meaningful to me."
While Renée’s experience is expansive, she’s an expert at guiding families through building balanced college lists, paying for college and financial aid, students needing educational support services, essay development, and choosing the right high school courses; she also specializes in liberal arts colleges, CTLC schools, Christian colleges, and Midwest colleges. In addition to being an admission consultant, she’s a Licensed Professional Counselor and can incorporate counseling techniques and interpersonal skills into the consulting process. As such, Renée considers the whole child when consulting, from mental health to special circumstances, and from academic goals to relationships. She also emphasizes finding the right campus fit. “College was a time of tremendous growth, independence, and discovery for me,” she recalls. “Looking back, I have never regretted the effort and intentionality I put into the college planning process. Finding the right fit made all the difference, and it’s reinforced for me how impactful the college experience can be when students choose a path that truly aligns with who they are and what they need.”
When Renée is not visiting college campuses (“I’ve visited over 120 across the U.S.!”), she’s enjoying her four children, golfing with her husband, and soaking up the beauty of their family vacation cottage in Northern Michigan. She also loves to cook, read, play board games, enjoy the beach and lake, and create on Canva. “Partnering with families and demystifying the college admissions journey has become my passion and best professional work yet,” Renée says. “Together, let’s embark on this transformative journey, ensuring a brighter future for your teen.”
