Matthew's Bio

Matthew calls himself an “aspiring polymath,” and his academic and everyday life reflects these aspirations. He completed a BA in mathematics and philosophy at Boston College in 2023. Matthew, who already possesses years of experience in tutoring, served as a research assistant in Boston College’s theology department, and worked as a law clerk for a major firm. He will enter Vanderbilt in Fall 2023 to pursue an MA in theological studies; he sees test prep as yet another step in his growth and development.
Matthew began tutoring math at a major educational company when he was a junior in high school, working in one-on-one and group settings. He has tutored a wide range of math, from first-grade arithmetic and numerical fluency up to high-school statistics. He also tutored students in SAT math and verbal skills while at the company, demonstrating a wealth of ability to match his breadth of knowledge.
Matthew’s range of interests are varied, but he now calls himself, first and foremost, a philosopher. It is not surprising, therefore, that Matthew says his tutoring style reflects this identity: “I favor a Socratic style of lessons, using conversational questions and answers to reveal to the student what they already know and then help them connect that knowledge to the problems they face.” This approach seems only natural for one so interested in the power of knowledge and personal awareness.
Matthew enjoys many pursuits outside the classroom, as well. For example, he has competed in archery, he ran a public speaking forum at Boston College, he was president of the college book club, and he was an executive board member of the school’s Philosophy and Machine Building Clubs.
Matthew loves everything about the theater, and he has been a part of three Shakespearean performances in New York City’s Central Park. Currently, he and his friends are working their way through Shakespeare’s entire canon.
