PrepNow Tutor - Eric B.
Eric is an accomplished scientific researcher who cannot help but spread his enthusiasm for science and mathematics through teaching and tutoring. He holds a BS in physics from Florida State University (graduating Cum Laude and with honors) and an MS in astrophysics from Michigan State University. His research experience includes studying possible scientific bias in data sets, conducting simulations in nuclear astrophysics, and examining thermodynamic properties of systems in magnetic fields. He began instructing as a teaching assistant in graduate school, working with approximately 90 students per term in both the introductory physics lab and the introductory astronomy lab. He has since garnered tutoring experience, as well, having worked with high school math students as well as with ACT students seeking help on the science and math sections.
Eric’s tutoring style is founded upon his belief that students must begin with a fundamental understanding of science and math in order to solve more complex problems. He says, for example, “Even when working through the most complex calculus, one must always rely on basic algebra and arithmetic.” He follows the same mindset in his science tutoring, helping students to break down problems into finer equations or situations upon which students can build understanding. Ultimately, too, he believes that physics and math are what he calls “processes to be done, not just understood.” So Eric seeks to teach students practical and hands-on solutions, not simply abstract ones.
Outside of the classroom or lab, Eric has always been active. In high school, he was an Eagle Scout and ran 5K races. In college, he studied jiu-jitsu and karate and played organized ultimate frisbee. Currently, he still loves the outdoors, often taking long walks or going on vigorous hikes. He also uses such activities as an opportunity to pursue one of his most recent hobbies, nature photography.
