PrepNow Tutor - Tristan J.

A math and physics tutor with a strong commitment to problem-solving, Tristan earned his BS magna cum laude in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida, where he is now pursuing his MS in the same field. He began tutoring in college through learning assistant positions, initially teaching calculus II and the controls laboratory in mechanical engineering; the latter required knowledge of calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations. “I love when I am able to help a student solve a problem that we both struggle with," Tristan shares. "It helps to have some back and forth, and it feels great when something seemingly unsolvable is solved."
Tristan’s tutoring style is collaborative and diagnostic. He begins by clarifying the student’s individual struggles, then works through different approaches with them to pinpoint what isn’t working. By focusing on the student’s own attempts, he can identify the root cause of the difficulty and guide them toward solutions. This process encourages students to build independence while simultaneously knowing they have structured support.
Patience is also central to Tristan's approach. “I think it's important to give students time to think,” Tristan explains. “We live in a pretty rushed world, but when we solve a problem, we can't jump blindly into things—we have to take it slow sometimes." By creating space for reflection, Tristan helps students develop both problem-solving skills and the confidence to work through complex challenges.
As a student, Tristan practiced kickboxing, made the dean’s list, and interned at Intel in summer 2024. He enjoys volunteering at the Humane Society Animal Shelter, playing guitar, and drawing; he has a strong interest in astronomy and telescopes. “I like to 3D print stuff,” Tristan reveals.
