Jude has over six years of experience tutoring high school and college-level math. While he specializes in statistics, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, pre-calculus, and calculus, he has also worked with elementary school learners, helping them get acquainted with principles of arithmetic, logic, and reading comprehension. His tailored approach and passion for the material help students build confidence.
Jude earned three degrees from the University of Iowa: a BS in statistics, a BA in mathematics, and an MS in biostatistics. As a graduate student, he worked as a research assistant and biostatistical consultant, a role in which he taught other researchers appropriate statistical methods and techniques. Tutoring others has been a staple throughout his academic career.
“My proudest moment as a tutor was when a student I had tutored in math for many years got her highest grade ever in a math class, and was able to explain the concepts back to me without assistance and with confidence,” he recounts.
Jude believes in his students, which makes a huge difference for reluctant learners or those with learning disabilities; “I think all students have the ability to succeed, provided a proper basis for their learning,” he says. He aims to polish students’ computational and quantitative skills, creating strong foundations to propel them forward. He even creates extra practice problems to challenge his students, ensuring they can explain the logic behind their processes when necessary. “I like to see the joy that comes from students coming to answers on their own using guided, Socratic questioning,” he adds.
His academic excellence earned him a spot on the dean’s list at the University of Iowa, where he was also involved in robotics, cycling, theatre, orchestra, and the biostatistics student organization.
Outside of work, he enjoys caring for his plants, walking his dog, reading, playing bass with his bandmates, and completing crosswords.
