Spencer's Bio

An aspiring doctor, Spencer enjoys working with students and making meaningful connections. He holds a BS summa cum laude in computer science with a minor in biochemistry from DePauw University. In addition to tutoring test prep, he is currently working as an EMT while preparing to apply to medical school.
“I originally started tutoring because my dad didn't want to help my sisters with their physics homework,” Spencer reflects. “Afterwards, I had to help them with their math and English, and it just kind of spiraled from there.” Spencer’s proudest moment as a tutor was getting a hug and a thank you in-person from a student whom he’d tutored online throughout Covid. “It was nice to know he appreciated the help and nice to hear from him in-person how his reading and writing had improved.” Throughout his tutoring career, Spencer has worked with students from third grade up to the college level and has tutored many topics: science (physics, chemistry, biology, and biochemistry); math (algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus); English; and computer science.
Spencer is an excellent test prep tutor because he recognizes that every student learns differently, and he enjoys adapting his explanations and teaching style to fit each student's strengths and challenges. “I particularly enjoy test prep tutoring because I always become genuinely invested in each student's success,” Spencer says. “Once I take on a student, I treat their goals as my own and am committed to helping them reach their full potential. I know how stressful it is studying for standardized tests, and I want the best possible outcome for every student I work with. I take pride in providing the guidance they need.”
When asked about his tutoring style, Spencer says, “I try to tutor the way I would want to be taught.” Additionally, he aims to be approachable and relatable so that students feel like they're working with someone who's helping them figure things out rather than just someone who's evaluating them. “Whether it's sports, academics, or another shared interest, I always try to find a way to relate to students and create a comfortable environment. I love tutoring because watching a student's test scores shoot up and seeing them gain confidence in themselves is incredibly rewarding.”
In high school, Spencer played soccer and track. In college, he continued in club soccer. He enjoys playing and watching soccer, weightlifting, flag and country trivia, and chess. “I lived in Germany for two years, thus my soccer addiction,” Spencer says.
