Christopher's Bio

A teacher who loves helping students overcome challenges and reach their goals, Chris earned his BA in English from Bowling Green State University and his MA and PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin. While in graduate school, he received several professional development awards, as well as the Outstanding Dissertation award. Since finishing his degrees in 2014, Chris has taught at numerous schools. He spent one year as a visiting assistant professor of English at Williams College, one year as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Texas, and later joined the adjunct faculty at Austin Community College. For the past two years, Chris has taught middle school and high school English. Currently, Chris is working for an online school.

In addition to his ten years of teaching experience, Chris has worked as a group course leader and tutor at a test prep company, a writing tutor at the UT-Austin Undergraduate Writing Center, a college admissions application reader, and a private tutor for English, history, and the ACT, SAT, and GRE exams. He's mentored over a hundred students from diverse backgrounds and with varied skill levels. "The most important thing I can do as a tutor is to help students learn to love the process of learning," Chris says. "To me this is the key to success in any field." Chris has coached two students to perfect math scores on the SAT.

"My biggest priority is to identify the particular learning style of a student and to help them become comfortable with the test," Chris says on his tutoring style. "Everyone has different hangups or difficulties with standardized tests, and I see it as my primary job to see the path to success."

Chris likes to set concrete goals with his students and to work towards them methodically. He's adept at finding a good balance between sticking to a plan and reacting in step with what the moment demands. He also likes to vary the types of practice he and his student do so that the student becomes comfortable with the material in a variety of contexts. "This flexibility helps them on the test day, when they are not always in control of all of the variables," Chris explains.

While in high school and college, Chris played in bands. When he's not teaching or tutoring, he's probably reading, cooking, playing guitar, or finding new ways to travel on a budget.
