Emily is an experienced teacher and tutor who skillfully balances life as an educator and a mother of four. She holds a BA in English with a minor in multicultural studies from the University of California, Berkeley.
Emily has taught and tutored a wide variety of subject areas and grade levels since 2002. Additionally, since 2018 she has been tutoring with StudyPoint in a variety of subject areas and in test-prep. In fact, her educational oeuvre extends far past her degree in English; she worked for years as a private math tutor, has taught foster-care students in-home, and has taught in almost every classroom from kindergarten to twelfth grade.
As Emily’s experience demonstrates, she is a well-rounded teacher who thrives in adapting to the new challenges of every student. She says, “I have a multicultural teaching philosophy, which means being open-minded and accepting of all backgrounds and experiences and understanding how they may influence students.” With this philosophy in mind, Emily encourages her students to help craft their own educational plans. After getting to know her students well, she helps them develop their own creative and individualized curricula. As she states, “I like students to craft their own biggest questions and main goals, and then we let their strengths and needs determine how sessions advance.”
Emily’s love of working with students also extends outside the classroom. For many years she was a softball coach and a youth and outdoor program instructor. Understandably, then, she is also an active person herself. In addition to playing softball and recently undertaking an obstacle race, she also strength trains and does Yoga. And, you guessed it: she is on her way to becoming an instructor in that realm, as well!
