PrepNow Tutor - Oly K.
Oly has a bachelor's degree in neuroscience from UCSD. She has done graduate coursework in biology at Michigan Tech and completed her alternative teaching certification for science in grades 7-12. Upon completing these studies, she moved to Texas and taught in public and charter schools. Currently, she is a private school teacher of biology, chemistry, and engineering.
Her first time teaching was as a volunteer ESL teacher in high school. She continued tutoring throughout college, and eventually became a full-time teacher. Her favorite thing about teaching is watching people light up when they understand a difficult concept for the first time, seeing people grow to love subjects they once feared, and helping set people on the path towards their chosen careers and passions. Over the years, Oly has worked with over 300 students, ranging from high school to college and graduate level. Her students have seen great results; one Spanish student brought a note from their teacher requiring her to sign off because they thought he was cheating since his grades had gone from Ds to B+s! Many students saw overall grade increases from Cs to high Bs and As.
Oly’s teaching style focuses on engagement. She knows a student understands a concept when they can not only answer complex questions correctly, but when they can also teach it back to her, so her tutoring often includes guided questioning and prompts for explanations. She also gives students time to catch and fix their own errors, increasing their confidence for the future. Overall, she thinks that students learn best when they know that their teacher is competent, passionate about the subject, and also genuinely caring about the student's growth as well, so that's what she aims for.
Oly loves to travel: she has visited 47 of the 50 U.S. states and 9 foreign countries! Throughout high school and college, she did various martial arts, like karate, taekwondo, aikido, and wushu, and also played soccer. With a truly creative spirit, she loves to read, write poetry and novellas, sing, do martial arts, make art, watch documentaries, be in nature, photograph birds and flowers, and cook!
