Barry's Bio

Barry graduated with honors from Pennsylvania State University with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering, and he then completed a master’s degree and a master’s certificate. He earned a master's certificate in project management from George Washington University and a master's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Florida. Barry currently serves as a senior manager of engineering at a defense contractor, and he is responsible for leadership training and hiring across 18 locations in the United States. He has worked for almost 40 years as an aerospace engineer and leader for Fortune 100 companies, in academia, and in technology start-up companies. Prior to his work in training and development, he created customized equipment used in jet engines, laser systems, satellites, rockets, and missiles. During his career, he has received significant accolades, such as the NASA Achievement Medal for design, launch, and operation of the SWIFT Gamma Ray satellite; the General Electric Outstanding Technical Achievement Award for development of the DEFENDER nuclear power plant debris filter; and the General Electric Customer Focus Award.
Barry’s introduction to tutoring occurred many years ago while he was a research faculty member at Penn State. As a research faculty member, he was not allowed to teach, so he fulfilled his desire to teach by part-time tutoring in test prep for the SAT, PSAT, GRE, and GMAT. Barry also has worked as a trainer of test prep instructors and trainers. When asked about his approach to working with students, Barry shared that he strives to “demystify” each test, so that come test day, students do not encounter any surprises. He also feels that “crystallizing each student's goal makes it easier for the students to focus on and prioritize test prep and homework against all the other competing priorities in their busy days.” Two of his greatest thrills are witnessing the expression on student faces when they finally grasp a tough skill or concept and hearing from a former student about an acceptance into a top-choice school.
During his high school years, Barry participated in band, student council, and Boy Scouts. He was a member of the track team, the Drama Club, Mu Alpha Theta (a mathematics honor society), and the National Honor Society. Barry also served as the editor-in-chief of the school yearbook, and he spent a year studying in Leeuwarden, Netherlands after winning a student exchange scholarship. As an undergraduate student, Barry continued to be involved in theater with the PSU Thespians, and he sang in the PSU Chorale. He was a member of Tau Beta Pi, the honor society for all disciplines of engineering, and Sigma Gamma Tau, the honor society for aerospace engineering. In addition, he remained active in athletics by playing club soccer. These days, Barry enjoys astronomy, hiking, traveling, bonsai horticulture, and sports photography. Fun fact: As an actor, Barry’s favorite lead roles are Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H and R.P. McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
