PrepNow Tutor - Kristen M.
An enthusiastic and inquisitive tutor, Kristen loves learning new things and sharing her positive attitude with everyone she interacts with. “I am passionate about helping students succeed in and out of the classroom,” Kristen says. She holds a BS in biology from Loyola University Chicago and an MS in anatomy from Howard University. After earning her graduate degree, Kristen worked as a project manager for a pharmaceutical consulting agency. In addition to tutoring, she is now a program manager for a nonprofit trade association, where she maintains sponsor relationships on behalf of her organization and organizes events to engage its membership base.
Kristen first discovered her interest in teaching through her work at summer camps. In 2018, she began teaching formally as a teaching assistant for the course musculoskeletal anatomy. She soon expanded this work into tutoring K-12 academic subjects and later SAT prep, teaching across a range of disciplines, including high school math and science. One of Kristen’s proudest moments as an educator came when she realized her physical therapist was a former anatomy student. “Seeing that the hard work my former student and I did during anatomy class paid off, and that they were successful in their dream career in part because of our time together in class, was incredibly meaningful,” Kristen reflects.
Kristen's tutoring style is affirming, interdisciplinary, and tailored to each student's needs. “Grades and test scores are important to me, but what matters most is teaching students problem-solving strategies, helping them master the material they’re learning step-by-step, and discussing how the subjects they’re learning relate to the world at large,” she says. Kristen is specifically welcoming to diverse populations, including but not limited to neurodivergent, BIPOC, and LGBTQ+ students.
As a student, Kristen was a Gates Millennium Scholar and participated in drama club, Quiz Bowl, National Honor Society, volunteer organizations, and swim team. Kristen loves to stay active and enjoys swimming, biking, rollerblading, hiking, and kayaking. She has recently started taking trampoline classes at a local circus school and piano classes at a music school. She also loves reading, cooking, caring for plants, and practicing new languages. Kristen has traveled to ten countries.
