Kaylan is a Product Marketing Specialist who develops innovative campaigns to drive product awareness and adoption. She holds a BA in communications, with a minor in cognitive science, from the University of California, Los Angeles. While her minor seems natural to one seeking to understand how to appeal to consumers in the marketplace, it also speaks to Kaylan's genuine interest in knowledge and learning. Indeed, as a high school student, Kaylan began tutoring her peers, and upon completing her college degree, she longed to return to tutoring.
“When I graduated college and started my full-time job, I missed tutoring; I re-discovered that sharing knowledge and fostering academic growth not only fulfilled me, but also allowed me to make a positive impact beyond my professional responsibilities,” says Kaylan. Since rejoining the ranks of educators, Kaylan has accrued years of experience tutoring students in most disciplines, from kindergarten to twelfth grade—but particularly high school students. In addition to tutoring language arts, English, and writing, she also has previous experience tutoring SAT and ACT prep; furthermore, she has tutored math in the areas of pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus.
In all aspects of her life, Kaylan calls herself a dynamic storyteller with a passion for weaving narratives. She uses her training as a marketer to “sell” success and achievement to her students, while simultaneously inviting them to help write their own educational narratives. She says, “I like to build a rapport with my students so that they are able to trust me. Students are more engaged and open to learning when they can communicate openly with me.” Indeed, as one might expect, Kaylan encourages a healthy give-and-take approach, ensuring that students feel just as comfortable asking questions of her as she is asking questions of them. This style helps her students to develop a process for learning, not just a means to a singular end.
Kaylan’s love of communication and expression also spills over into her leisure interests. A firm believer in lifelong learning, she is an avid reader. Currently, her attention is taken by books on walkable cities and urban planning, as she is fascinated with the intersection of community and design. When not virtually strolling through an imagined urban environment, Kaylan also enjoys writing herself. She is rumored to grace lucky friends with one of her specialties at baking: chocolate chip scones.
