PrepNow Tutor - Mariya Z.
Mariya, who is bilingual in English and Russian, has helped students master concepts in math, reading, writing, biology, and SAT prep since 2013. She has also helped students navigate the often intimidating process of college application essays. She earned a bachelor’s in molecule, cellular, and developmental biology from the University of Washington in Seattle. Since college, she has worked as a biotech production association and a tutor at a regional learning center.
Mariya takes a relaxed, inquisitive approach to tutoring that incorporates classic strategies like modeling and application. Describing herself as “dedicated, knowledgeable, and friendly,” she aims to create a relaxing learning environment so students feel comfortable asking questions. “While I am explaining, I encourage the student to ask questions, to make sure that they understand and can continue with confidence,” she shares. Her experience working with students who have ADHD and language processing issues allows her to adapt to suit a range of students’ needs on the fly. Ultimately, she wants her students to end each session feeling enthused and confident about tackling assignments and tests.
Her stellar grades earned her a spot on the University of Washington’s dean’s list. She was also a Phi Theta Kappa honor society member at Bellevue Community College, where she played tennis and took Russian language lessons.
She’s passionate about helping animals—especially cats—in her free time. She has three cats, including a mother and son, who graciously allow her to reside in their home.
