PrepNow Tutor - Marquin S.
Marquin has been a high school substitute teacher and then transitioned into a full time job as a special education teacher, and he has also tutored ACT/SAT prep. He received his BS at Eastern Michigan University, where he majored in digital media and communications and minored in entertainment management.
After Marquin graduated from college, he started working in radio and journalism. "I became a published author as my works are featured in Billboard, Detroit Metro Times, and more," he says. "After a few years in the industry, I transitioned into more marketing roles as I took on Brand Ambassador and Product Specialist work." While working in marketing, he represented top brands from Pepsi to Firestone Tire. Due to the COVID pandemic, Marquin would later transition to education, where he found success as a high school communications teacher and later as a special education teacher.
Marquin was inspired to start teaching by his mother. At the time, he was looking for work due to the Covid pandemic, and he decided to try out teaching. He started out as a substitute, but quickly moved up to being a special education case manager. "My proudest moment as a teacher is when my student graduated from fifth grade," Marquin recounts. Because the student had such a difficult time with his behavior and academics when he started at the school, it was a challenge. "But over the course of three years we made great progress together!"
Marquin's teaching style is encouraging, and he also asks lots of leading questions of the students and offers copious guidance. "I believe that my teaching style is effective due to being able to be direct yet personable with my students," he says. "I believe that by having this approach, I am able to get students to open up and be more clear about what their issues are within their work, and I am able to apply myself more efficiently in my teaching."
When Marquin was in school, he participated in Drama Club, Glee Club, NHS, Step Team, and Link Crew. He is also a member of the Black Media Association. Outside of work, his hobbies include working on his startup company and creating music. "Two fun facts about me are that my favorite color is orange and my favorite time of the season is fall," he shares.
