PrepNow Tutor - Jamiela B.

Jamiela is a research psychologist who has always been equally as dedicated to her teaching as to her scholarship. She holds three degrees: a BA in psychology from West Virginia Wesleyan University; an MA in applied psychological research from Penn State University; and a PhD in psychology from Claremont Graduate University. She began teaching in 2017 and has taught general psychology, abnormal psychology, social psychology, research methods, and psychological aspects of death and dying at the college level (including instruction of dual-enrollment high-school students). In her capacity as an instructor, she has also worked in multiple modalities, including in-person, online, and hybrid courses.
Jamiela teaches with the firm belief that students learn best when they feel seen, respected, and safe. She says, “My teaching mantra is that a sense of safety is crucial for intellectual risk-taking and deeper learning and that education should be an engaging, collaborative, and transformative journey.” To embody this approach, she employs a variety of interactive teaching methods that cater to different learning styles and that keep students engaged. Her instruction often features interactive discussion, hands-on activities, and real-world applications of course concepts. She believes that “by connecting theoretical knowledge to everyday experiences, I help students see the relevance and excitement of what they are learning.” In this way, Jamiela makes her students collaborators in the learning process, empowering them to continue the process even after she and they part ways.
In her everyday life, Jamiela clings to her musical theater roots, still listening to many musical soundtracks that captivated her in her youth. She can also be found, at times, dancing to such tunes, relying on her jazz, modern, and tap skills to guide her. Jamiela is also an avid reader of classic literature, having recently completed the entire oeuvre of Jane Austen novels. Otherwise, she spends a lot of time in her garden and in the kitchen with her produce, cooking and canning her prizes.
