PrepNow Tutor - Sally S.
Sally holds a BA in English with a minor in computer science from Kalamazoo College and an MSIT from Lawrence Technological University. Throughout her career, she has primarily been in IT with experience in automotive and life sciences; however, she has also worked as a business analyst, tech support rep, UX researcher, product manager, and IT manager.
Sally started tutoring in middle school as a peer math tutor and continued teaching in various capacities throughout her education. “My favorite moments are when I'm able to explain a concept someone's struggling with to them in just the right way, and I can see them suddenly grasp it in real time,” Sally says. As a teacher’s assistant, Sally has taught creative writing and programming courses. She’s also worked as an adult literacy tutor with Kalamazoo Literacy Council, helping students prepare for the math section of the GED; moreover, she's been an in-class aide for a third-grade class, assisting the students with reading and arithmetic.
“I would describe my tutoring style as patient and flexible. I love learning, and want to share that love with other people,” Sally says. She works to understand where the student is getting stuck and tries to meet them there. “I love teaching students and making complex ideas easy to understand.”
In high school, Sally was on the math team and started a school-sponsored book club with several classmates. In college, she was a cartoonist for the school newspaper and volunteered in the mail center. Sally is in Beta Gamma Sigma, an international business honor society, for academic achievement in her grad school program. She’s involved with her local community garden and enjoys reading, crocheting, and doing puzzles. She lives in Michigan with her husband and dog, Idris. “I've won hula-hooping contests,” Sally shares.
