PrepNow Tutor - Allison P.
Allison loves working with her hands—she’s a chiropractor who is passionate about needlework! Allison attended Michigan State University where she was recognized as a Distinguished Freshman Scholar by the Honors College, an award that included a four-year full scholarship. While at Michigan, she was also awarded first place in the University Undergraduate Research and Arts Forum for her undergraduate honors thesis. She graduated from MSU with a bachelor of science in psychology. After undergrad, Allison earned her doctorate of chiropractic at Palmer College of Chiropractic where she graduated summa cum laude. After earning her chiropractic degree, Allison worked as a chiropractor in the Midwest, then California. She eventually started her own mobile chiropractic clinic.
In high school, Allison was approached by former teachers who asked her to tutor younger students. She also taught piano lessons in high school and college. While in graduate school, Allison took on private clients as well as working for the school as a biochemistry study leader. After graduation, Allison continued working at a small tutoring company where she taught a range of subjects including mathematics, science, social studies, and test preparation. Her experience with science encompasses everything from middle school science to high school biology, chemistry, and physics. She has taught elementary and middle school math as well as algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and pre-calculus.
“My tutoring style centers on the idea that the student and I are a team,” Allison explains. She focuses on understanding how the student thinks and approaches new information. Her tutoring “then becomes quite tailored to each student” as she gets to know them. Allison prefers to give students ownership over their learning and their goals, then provides support so they can achieve those objectives. She wants to find students’ strengths in order to “leverage such strengths strategically.” Of her connection to tutoring, Allison says, “I find the work so fulfilling in big and small ways, and I find when I feel pride, it is for the students who have blossomed and shown what they are capable of.”
As a professional, Allison considers her entrepreneurship as a chiropractor one of her greatest achievements. Outside of work, she likes to sing in her church choir and play piano at home. As a student, she was a member of the drumline and marching band. She’s an avid runner and reader. In her spare time, she knits, crochets, sews, and embroiders while her cats look on.
