PrepNow Tutor - Andrew Z.
Andrew first picked up a book at the age of five, and that action sparked his desire to learn about the world around him and help others. In learning about the world around him, Andrew earned a BA in English and an MA in English education from Xavier University. Along the way, he also began to help other students in an official capacity. First, while a student himself, he tutored college-level statistics. Since then, he has tutored SAT and ACT test-prep for various companies, and he has become a full-time high-school teacher. Though he works primarily in English, Andrew has also taught algebra, geometry, pre-calculus, and Spanish at the high-school level. Thus, he brings an array of experience to StudyPoint students.
Andrew’s teaching style is built upon a belief that communication between teacher and student is crucial. Therefore, for Andrew, each new interaction is built first upon simple conversation. A genuine act like asking a student about their day, he feels, can open the door to further engagement. Once he has at least a spark of that connection, he starts to nudge students toward their own successes. That said, he does try only to nudge – he does not believe providing knowledge alone fosters true growth. He says, “I do not explicitly provide the students with answers but instead provide them the tools and instructions that they need to reach their own answers.” Then, once the students are confident in their approaches, Andrew works to help the students toward outright mastery.
Andrew has always been physically and mentally active in his free time. In high school, for example, he was on the rowing team. Since, he has become an avid runner, even completing a full marathon. He also shares his love of running as coach of his high-school track team. For mental rigor, Andrew likes to read a lot, particularly science fiction and fantasy fiction. Additionally, he likes to learn about world culture through travel. He has already visited Argentina twice, for example, and an upcoming trip to the United Kingdom will expand his horizons even further.
