PrepNow Tutor - Michelle C.
A proud math and science nerd, Michelle is always eager to share her knowledge with her students. She holds a BS in biology from Michigan Technological University. After graduating, Michelle worked in a laboratory for a major retailer, performing quality control testing for many of their products. After starting a family, Michelle transitioned to education and worked at her kids’ school. “First, I was a lunch mom, then a paraprofessional,” Michelle shares. “I realized I loved being in the classroom, so I started subbing. That was eight years ago. I absolutely love what I do!”
Whether tutoring one-on-one or teaching in a classroom, Michelle loves interacting with her students and seeing their excitement at catching on to new concepts. As a substitute teacher since 2017, Michelle has held a variety of long-term positions ranging from second grade and elementary art to algebra 2 and ninth-grade ELA. Her tutoring experience is also expansive and includes SAT prep, IB entrance exam prep, and resource room math and ELA.
“I believe in a very hands-on approach and breaking down materials into smaller parts to enable each individual to find what works for them,” Michelle says when asked about her tutoring style. “I prefer working on paper and using demonstrations because they help to show patterns and techniques that may sometimes be overlooked.” Michelle also thinks it's important to talk with students instead of at them. “It creates the ability for the student to ask questions and guide me to where they need me to focus my attention to best benefit them,” she says.
In high school, Michelle was in drama and the National Honor Society. In college, she was a member of Alpha Kappa Psi, a national business fraternity, and the ski and snowboarding club. She was also on the dean's list and received the President's Award for Educational Excellence.
Outside of work, she likes to spend time with her husband and two children. “We attend DCFC matches and spend a lot of time up north, where I'm from,” Michelle shares. “My kids are my travel buddies. We go all over the place and enjoy amusement parks, sporting events, and concerts in other cities.” Michelle is also a voracious reader. She has two dogs, three cats, four mice, and a snake named Poptart.
