PrepNow Tutor - Jasmine B.
Jasmine, who goes by Jas, has taught in classrooms and one-on-one settings, covering the gamut of science topics plus math and test prep. She earned a BS in biology and a minor in chemistry from Howard University, plus an MA in curriculum design from the School of the Art Institute in Chicago. In addition to test prep tutoring, she is an assistant teacher at an elementary school.
Jas began tutoring when she was in 7th grade. "My friends and I started an after-school tutoring program to help our peers who were struggling with math. From then on, I realized I had a talent for teaching people new concepts so they can understand them," she recounts. Since graduating, Jas has taught 7th and 8th grade science and technology, high school science (physics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, forensic science, and AP biology), and high school math (algebra and geometry). She was even designated "Teacher of the Year" at a school where she worked.
Moreover, Jas specialized in SAT & ACT prep as a classroom teacher and private tutor. She has hosted bootcamp-style test prep sessions with anywhere from 5 to 300 students!
Jas believes that building a positive rapport with students sets everyone up for long-term success. "Getting to know students' interests always breaks a wall because it shows the student that the tutor cares about the student as a human being," she says. "In my experience, this allows students to feel comfortable making mistakes because they've shown you their humanity and who they are outside of the exam," she adds. Jas is adept at breaking down complicated math and verbal concepts, and coupled with practiced test-taking skills, students often feel a sense of accomplishment and mastery. "Helping students identify recurring structures provides them with confidence to try problems, no matter how difficult they are," she concludes.
As a student, Jas participated in competitive dance. Currently, she's a part-time gymnastics coach and enjoys doing yoga and attending sporting events. "I also enjoy completing puzzles and Lego Builds."
