PrepNow Tutor - Breanna K.
An extroverted, upbeat tutor who loves connecting with her students, Breanna is always eager to help and strives to approach every interaction with positivity. She holds a BS cum laude in biomedical engineering from the University of Arkansas. “Since graduating, I’ve worked with several research and engineering organizations, studied abroad to better understand international health systems, and collaborated with partners in Malawi, Nigeria, and the Dominican Republic to design appropriate medical devices and support their effective implementation,” she shares. In her most recent role, she mentored engineering and high school students on the design process and critical thinking. “Currently, I am continuing to strengthen my science communication skills through tutoring and mentoring in my community while actively building connections within the engineering and global health fields,” Breanna says.
Breanna first started tutoring as a peer mentor for freshman engineering students, which grew naturally from helping her classmates in biology, chemistry, and math. She went on to work with high school students through Canopy NWA, tutoring in math, science, study strategies, and time management. “My proudest moment as a tutor was seeing one of my Canopy students—who was adjusting to a new country and struggling academically—gain confidence, improve her study habits, and begin advocating for herself with teachers,” Breanna reflects. “Watching her succeed reminded me why I love teaching: helping students realize what they’re capable of.” In addition to her tutoring experience, Breanna has spent significant independent time mastering standardized test strategies through online platforms and test prep programs.
“My teaching style is patient, supportive, and connection-focused,” Breanna says. “I work to understand how each student thinks, then break concepts down in a way that helps them genuinely click rather than just memorize steps.” This style comes from Breanna’s own experience, as she relied on many tutors throughout high school and college as an engineering student. “Those moments when things finally ‘made sense’ shaped how I approach tutoring today,” Breanna says. She is passionate about mentoring because it allows her to give back and create meaningful impact in her community. “I believe all students deserve an equal playing field and access to clear, encouraging guidance,” Breanna says. “My philosophy is that every student can succeed when they receive personalized support, feel comfortable asking questions, and are shown strategies that fit their learning style.”
As a student, Breanna was the recipient of the Gilman International Scholarship and the Donald M. Payne International Development Fellowship; she also presented her work from Rice360 at the National BMES Conference in 2024. Additionally, she was vice president of the National Society for Black Engineers and a Bible study leader for Cru, and taught Zumba on campus.
Breanna loves spending time with friends and family, and is always looking for new ways to stay connected with the people around her. “I’m an avid reader, and I enjoy traveling and exploring different cultures whenever I can,” Breanna explains. “I also love baking—trying new recipes is one of my favorite ways to relax—and I love finding new shows to binge watch.” Breanna played piano for three years as a child.
