Jose's Bio

A calm and patient tutor, Jose holds a BA in psychology and a minor in chemistry, which he studied on the pre-med track. After graduating from NYU in 2024, Jose joined the Family Service Association as a Community-Based Case Manager, where he worked with chronically homeless individuals navigating severe mental and physical health challenges. In October 2025, he transitioned to his current role as a Medical Scribe at Rothman Orthopedics, where he documents patient encounters in real time, supports orthopedic surgeons during clinic visits, and continues to build his clinical foundation. In addition to tutoring test prep, Jose is also currently preparing to apply to medical school after recently sitting for the MCAT. “As a tutor, I believe consistent study habits and deliberate repetition are what actually move the needle, especially on high-pressure tests like the SAT and ACT.”

Jose started tutoring in high school, working with middle school students, and he continued tutoring through college as a peer tutor. “Recently, after taking the MCAT, I felt pulled back into tutoring,” Jose reflects. “I genuinely enjoyed the test prep process and wanted to share that strategy and mindset with students.” His proudest tutoring moment was helping a fellow NYU classmate move her grade in General Chemistry from a C+ to an A- across a single semester. “We built a structured study plan together, worked through the concepts she felt shakiest on, and watched the homework, lab, and exam scores rise steadily week by week.”

At NYU, Jose tutored undergraduates in psychology, biology, and chemistry (general and organic); there he focused on active recall, spaced repetition, practice-based study strategies, and academic writing support. He has several years of experience tutoring SAT and ACT prep; and, in math, he’s tutored pre-algebra, algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and pre-calculus.

“I believe mastery of any subject comes from two things working together: building strong study habits and practicing through deliberate repetition,” Jose says. “This is especially true for high-stakes standardized tests, where confidence under timed pressure depends on hundreds of small reps.” Jose also works to anchor new material to a student's outside interests, such as a sport, a video game, or a TV show. “Connecting the lesson to something the student already cares about reinforces the concept far better than another generic textbook example,” Jose says. “My goal is for students to leave each session a little more confident and a little less afraid of the next problem set.”
In high school, Jose played varsity baseball, contributed to his school's humor magazine, was president of several honor societies, and was a leader of his school's diversity and inclusion club. In college, he played intramural softball at NYU and was a member of his school's academic and cultural scholars program; he also worked as a server at City Winery and received numerous merit scholarships.

Jose is an avid reader with a soft spot for the classics and loves spending time outdoors with friends; he also enjoys seeking out new restaurants and live music venues, in addition to gaming (Pokémon, competitive team games, single-player RPGs, and whatever his friends are playing). “I'm currently preparing to apply to medical school, so test prep is more than a job for me,” Jose says. “I'm actively living the standardized-test world myself through the MCAT, and I find that perspective makes me especially empathetic to the stress and stamina students face on the SAT and ACT.”
