PrepNow Tutor - Ben B.
Ben calls himself an adventurous explorer, so it seems only natural that he has used his love of history to take him on countless journeys - from the historic U.S. Consulate in Scotland to Greek, Roman, and medieval civilizations. He holds a dual-major BA in history and political science and an MA in history from Boise State University, graduating in both cases with honors.
Following his graduate studies, Ben worked for a decade as an instructor of ethics, philosophy, world religions, and political philosophy at both the College of Western Idaho and Boise State University. In addition, since 2013, he has worked at the high-school level as a teacher of history (ancient, medieval, European, American), American government, Latin, rhetoric, writing, and grammar. He also served for nearly a decade as Head of School and Principal Director of Boise Classical Academy and brings prior test-prep tutoring experience with him to StudyPoint.
Benjamin truly loves his field, and he seeks to spread his enthusiasm through his teaching. As such, his style is conversational and relational. He notes that though he began teaching at the college level, he enjoys secondary education even more because he finds the students a bit more genuinely interested in sharing his love. A true student of history, Ben chooses primarily to lead Socratic discussions using the ancient “trivium.” He says, “I encourage students to start with the facts (grammar), reason through them (logic), and learn to express them persuasively (rhetoric). My goal is to help students build a voice that is both logically sound (logos) and backed by a character of integrity (ethos).”
In addition to exploring the globe and its cultures, Ben has always had many interests. In high school, for example, he was into ultimate frisbee, debate, the philosophy club, drama, and fencing. He has also developed a love of comic books, and he even draws his own. Finally, he has recently taken up sailing and likes to take hikes with his German Shepherd.
