PrepNow Tutor - Esme S.
Esme holds a BA in geography with a specialization in geographic information science from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Throughout her career, she has worked as an applied behavioral analysis therapist, peer educator, and case manager, among other roles.
Esme started teaching in 2016 at Winston Middle School as a peer educator for the school's drug and alcohol program, and she later helped design the curriculum at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. “I was interested in the public health aspect and working with incoming students,” Esme shares. Esme is an excellent test prep tutor because she’s always been a strong test taker and is passionate about working with students. “I love empowering students and encouraging them to reach their fullest potential,” Esme says. “I also love seeing students notice the effects of their growth, going from a state of doubt to one of confidence, from a state of confusion to one of better understanding of the world around them.”
Esme’s background in health and social services makes her uniquely qualified to work with students who may have learning disabilities, ADHD, autism, or similar issues, as well as those who have confidence issues or other emotional obstacles. “My teaching philosophy is centered around engaging with the individual student and their particular needs as much as possible,” Esme shares. “In my experience, I think having a holistic view of the student is key. The goal is to allow students to enrich themselves and work for themselves, not just be someone who pushes them.”
As a student, Esme participated in the yearbook, school newspaper, theater, and improv club, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She enjoys tabletop role-playing games, rock climbing, discovering new music, and writing. Esme has a black belt in taekwondo.
