PrepNow Tutor - Calvin S.
A supportive and engaging tutor, Calvin holds a BS in biology from Indiana University. “I love to help students excel in everything that they choose to do,” he says. A recent graduate, Calvin is currently tutoring test prep and working as a server while awaiting acceptance decisions from dental schools.
Calvin started tutoring in high school because he loved math and wanted to help others feel the same way, especially considering the negative stigma surrounding it. He quickly discovered that he’s great at working with students who are struggling academically. “My proudest moment as a tutor was helping a student in calculus go from a 40% to passing with only weeks to go in class,” Calvin says. “She and her parents were very concerned that she wouldn't pass.” Throughout his career, Calvin has tutored K-12 math and test prep, including the Dental Admissions Test.
When asked about his teaching style, Calvin says, “I think it is important for students to be able to teach the details back to me. Once a student demonstrates that they can teach a subject and its details, mastery has been achieved.” He notes that teaching material back is one of the best ways to retain information. Throughout lessons, Calvin asks questions to understand where the student is struggling with the subject. “It brings me a lot of joy to help students conquer assignments and studying!”
In high school, Calvin ran track, played basketball, and participated in the National Honor Society. In undergrad, he played intramural and fraternity league basketball and participated in the biology club, pre-dental society, Pi Kappa Phi as the mental health chair, and the NF Network as an advocate. He was on the Executive Dean's List and received the Dean's Scholarship. “I love to play basketball and hang out with my friends,” Calvin says. Calvin also enjoys arts and crafts, drawing, reading, and video games. “I'm passionate about becoming the best version of myself.” Calvin recently visited Morocco.
