PrepNow Tutor - Jake R.
A responsible and lighthearted tutor, Jake holds a BA in digital and electronic media studies from Pomona College and an MSc in computer science from Brown University. After college, Jake spent almost ten years working in tech startups in San Francisco. “I learned how to code, working in the Magnuson Center for Entrepreneurship at Dartmouth College and returned to grad school to study computer science.” Now, Jake is tutoring while building a startup in animation.
“Ever since I started learning, I have loved sharing information with others,” Jake says when asked what led him to become a tutor. Jake has teaching experience in coding, entrepreneurship, and SAT prep, including serving as a teaching assistant at a learning center, tutoring middle and high school students online, and teaching entrepreneurship at Dartmouth College. His tutoring style is engaged and interactive. “I try to make lessons fun for my students," Jake says, noting that this is how he personally learns best.
Jake’s approach to tutoring is centered on empowerment. “I am very thorough and quick with finding the correct answer, and I will teach your student to do the same," he explains. "But I believe in making the learning process enjoyable as well.” Jake especially loves making difficult concepts “click” for students who are struggling or didn’t think they could do it. “I love demystifying the test, so it becomes less scary and more like something familiar that the tutee knows how to step through from practice,” Jake shares. “I also love injecting humor into the study process. The SAT and ACT are hard enough without being overly serious in how we engage with them.”
In high school, Jake played field hockey and softball, and was captain of the swim team. He attended Brown University on a full tuition scholarship. Outside of work, he enjoys walking around his neighborhood, spending time with friends, and playing around in his garden.
