Amanda's Bio

Originally from Wisconsin, Amanda has lived and attended schools on both the East and West Coasts. She earned her Bachelor's in History with a minor in Ancient Civilizations at Boston College, where she was a Sister Thea Bowman Scholar, a Dean's List student and an Undergraduate Research Fellow for a summer. It was there her interest in education began to develop, when she started volunteering with an after-school program for low-income students. For two years, she worked with kids from 11 to 18 years old. "It was great to really get to know the students and to see their development and confidence grow," she says.

After graduating, she worked for a charter high school in Boston as a full-time tutor for twelve sophomore and junior students. She developed individualized lesson plans to best serve the students' needs, met with them for hour-long lessons daily in small groups of two to four students, and helped them develop math and literacy skills, while also working on homework help and standardized test prep.

She then moved to California to pursue her Master's in Art History at the University of California, Davis. She held a Fellowship in her department and continued to work as an educator, as a teaching assistant for various lower-level undergraduate courses in Art History, Asian American Studies, and Classics. She led weekly discussion sections, held office hours for extra guidance, and worked closely with students to ensure material comprehension. Since finishing that degree, she has been working and interning in museums.

"When tutoring, I always try to let the students demonstrate their knowledge and understanding to me as fully as possible before I begin to assist them," she says. "Whenever possible, I try to use leading questions to help students practice and develop the independent, higher-order thinking skills necessary for success with standardized tests. I work hard to develop good relationships with my students and encourage open communication so that we can work together in the most productive ways possible."

In high school, Amanda was active in theater, choir, band, and National Honor Society, as well as playing on the softball team. In college, she was involved in the Student Admission Program, talking with prospective students about life at Boston College. She also volunteered with groups that served various Boston-area communities.

Amanda loves hiking, traveling, reading, and spending time outdoors. Fun fact: She can recite Lewis Carroll's poem "Jabberwocky" from memory!
